I've been trying to disable the fake engine sound on my mk4 Skoda Octavia RS using the OBDEleven app. I've tried the one click app and it says "not supported" and in the list of modules there is no module A9 "structure borne sound". I've tried with the bonnet open and ignition on with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

fillnill :Hi. If the SCAN for this car does NOT report a module at address A9 - then the module will NOT be installed. If this car has a "fake engine sound" and if it does NOT have an A9 module - then the noise almost certainly will be produced by what the wiring diagram calls the Engine sound generator module (J943).
So, whereas the A9 module uses an actuator that vibrates the windshield - J943 vibrates an actuator in the exhaust like this:
This is how J943 is reported on a SCAN (in this case, the module was installed on a Golf mk7)
C0 Exterior Noise System description: SAS-GEN 2 AGA Software number: 5G0907160 Software version: 0006 Hardware number: 4G0907160B Hardware version: H09 Serial number: 131205200370 ODX name: EV_ActuaForExterNoiseUDS ODX version: 003013
So, J943 normally lives at address hexC0 on the CAN network. Does the SCAN for this car also have a hexC0 module? And is this car a TDI?

Hi Don,
Thanks for your reply. The is a petrol Octavia RS (TSi).
I’ve been able to find the A9 model listed in the app but only when it’s not connected to the car. Under: Garage>Skoda Octavia>Control units>A9 Structure borne sound. As soon as I contact to the car I can no longer see that module. My car definitely has a sound actor as I am able to turn it off under the individual diving mode and it turns off. I bought the obdeleven dongle after others over on the briskoda forum used it to disable the fake engine sound in their mk4 Octavia’s.
Thanks

hmm...... that is very odd!! What happens if you select "ID number" and/or "Name" tabs on the Control Units screen

Hi Don, I just tried what you suggested and it makes no difference what button I press at the top, it just seems to reorder the list of modules? I took a screen recording of the device connected to the car and all the modules that come up. Also the one click app for the sound actor saying “not supported”. imgur.com/a/qTufpLaEverywhere I look online everyone seems to “easily” turn off the fake engine noise using the OBDEleven device. I tried another one click app (for disabling the headlight washers) and it worked perfectly. Not sure what I’m doing wrong? Thanks for your help

hmm......... OK - the odd aspect of your video is the sheer quantity of modules that are shown in the Control Units screen (CUS). I intend no offense, but there can't be that many modules installed in this car- it's simply not possible!! So, my apology in advance if you already know this stuff- but the "master' module in this car that is responsible for populating the entries in the CUS is the Gateway module which lives at address 19 on the CAN network (I'll call this the "19 module" in the remaining part of this reply) . Amongst the many tasks that the 19 module has, is the job of polling each installed module and requesting information about its status and its identity. It's possible for the 19 module to poll a total of 255 other modules. However, to make the polling task more efficient, the 19 module has a special list of those modules that were factory installed in the car when built. By polling ONLY those modules in the list, the job of the 19 module becomes much easier (in engineering speak, the polling task becomes "more efficient"). The list is called the Gateway Installation List" (GIL). Notice on your video that each module on the CUS has a number on the upper left side which is in a colored enclosure. The number is the module's address on the CAN network and the colored enclosure shows the status of each module that the 19 module has polled with respect to the GIL. These are possible states of modules with respect to the GIL - as reported on the Control Units screen: - Module correctly listed (meaning the module is actually installed in the car) and
- Module has NO reported errors
- Module has reported errors
- Module incorrectly listed because:
- Module is listed, but is NOT installed
- Module is NOT listed, but is installed
- Module is currently off-line
The colored enclosures for each module entry are as follows: - GREEN, or RED for correctly listed modules - category 1. above
- YELLOW, BLACK, or WHITE for incorrectly listed modules - category 2. above
The ONLY entries in the CUS should be those in category 1. above. According to your video, this is not the case for this car!!
So, to correctly code the GIL - do this: - Ignition ON, engine OFF
- Fire-up OBD11 software and connect to the car
- Go-to the Control Units screen (the screen in the first part of your video)
- CAREFULLY (capital letters for emphasis) make a list of the name and address of those modules that have a GREEN, or RED colored enclosure - these modules are installed in the car and they are correctly registered in the GIL
- Follow the steps in the pictures below to access the GIL
- Amend the GIL so that the ONLY tick marks are for those modules that are on your written list. Include a tick for the A9 module
- Go back to the Control Units screen and re-check that NONE of the modules have BLACK, WHITE or YELLOW colored enclosures.
- Is the A9 module shown on the amended Control Units screen with either a GREEN, or RED enclosure?

Hi Don,
Thank you again for the detailed reply. I appreciate the extra information as I’m not an expert on this by any means. I will give this a go this afternoon and see if I can follow your guide.
I’m not sure if I can access the editing function (pencil icon top right) without the pro account/ subscription? I think I tried clicking on it before but I couldn’t access it.
Thanks again for your support. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Good afternoon Don,
I tried again this afternoon and as I expected I wasn’t able to enter the editing mode as I don’t have the pro subscription.
However, I was able to get it to work! I dug out my old android phone and installed the app on it; thinking the iOS version might have a bug? (Clutching at straws… but worth a shot) Anyway, connect the car via my android phone and suddenly the A9 module was visible. And even better the “one click app” for the soundaktor was available. Set it to zero and now it’s disabled.
That said, there were still plenty of modules visible… not sure why I have more than I’m supposed to? Just happy I was able to mute the annoying fake engine sound.
If anyone else is having similar problems, try switching to the android version of the app and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks again Don for your help. Much appreciated!
