Cruise control not working

I bought a rebuild mk7 gti se US 2016 a month ago and I've cleared a lot of error code already... My problem is the cruise control button fuctioned as horn, and other buttons related to cruise control such as speed, set button not function at all.Buttons on the right is normal and the volume adjust is normal.  I've searched a lot and my conclusion is it is related to long coding of clock spring, but since I don't get the original long coding, I hope someone that owns the same car can share with me. It is module 16.
Also I have issue with AFS, seller told me it was a aftermarket light, so I'll just leave it there for now.

OK, this is a "Yankee" Golf mk7! Bummer - because North America Region (NAR) models are different!!

In any event, my hunch based solely on the info provided is that the problem(s) with this car go deeper than just long-code values!

For example - look at how your SCAN reports the 16 Steering Column module. Notice that much of the information about the module is missing. This suggests that communication between the Steering Column Module and the Gateway module is not good!! I'm not sure why this is happening, but it's unlikely to be because of long-code!

My guess (emphasis on "guess") is that the missing details of the 16 Steering Column module might be as follows:

• Software number: 5Q0953521xx
• Software version: 0235
• Hardware number: 5Q0953569x

"x"=unknown

Please select the 16 module from the Control Units screen with OBD11 - then click-on Info and paste a copy of the screenshot in a new forum post showing the details above for this module

The other deficiency with your SCAN is that it doesn't show the long-code strings for any module. Some OBD11 SCANs do show long-code and some don't - I've never understood why!!

Depending on which 16 module is actually installed in this car - I suspect that there will be NO Byte/Bits on the long-code related to the problem that you describe. However, the 2 x error messages on this module are concerning. The B114913 - Windshield wiper intermittent mode switch Open circuit fault suggests a mechanical problem with the contacts on the wiper stalk switch . I'm not sure about the B116229 - Selector lever park position lock switch Implausible signal fault!

BUT (yes, there is always a "but") - the B115496 - CCS Switch Internal malfunction error on the 19 Gateway module is more pertinent to your fault description. "CCS"= Cruise Control System.

I'm not sure if the "internal malfunction" refers to the steering wheel buttons, or if the Gateway module believes that CCS on this car is managed via a switch on the steering wheel stalk (rather than a bunch of buttons on the steering wheel face). Normally this information is set in 19 Gateway module long code (Byte 01, Bit 0) and also in long-code on the  Engine module (Byte 05 Bit 5-6). However, since there are no long-code values in your SCAN - I can't make further comment!

So, if you want to pursue this matter - in addition to the screenshot that I requested earlier, please post-up the current long-code strings for the following modules:

• 1 Engine Module
  
• 16 Steering column module
• 19 Gateway module

And - 55 Headlight Regulation module on the your SCAN reports a problem with the Left headlamp power output stage. Normally this error message means that the left headlight isn't working. Is this so? And what type of headlight fittings are installed on this car - HID, or LED ?

Finally, please re-post a fresh SCAN - this time as an attachment rather than as a data-dump in a post. But before doing this, enable the Freeze Frame facility on your OBD11 account so we can see the complete diagnostic information about these faults - read THIS

I've been messing around with module 16 long coding, I tried a lot of combinations but nothing worked at all.
Interestingly the module 16 has a lot information missed.
My left light worked perfectly well.

try changing the long-code string on the 16 Steering column module from 0610 to 0410 (which means Byte 00, Bit 1=0). Then clear errors and re-scan

Yeah I saw a guy said his 2015GTD had 0410 So I tried it,but didn't work at all. In fact no matter what I do, it doesn't change anything at all, all buttons functions as same before.

OK - I suspect that there is now sufficient diagnostic evidence in your attempts to suggest that the underlying cause of this problem might NOT be a coding issue! Maybe its time to change your error-finding methodology and start looking for physical reasons for the fault!

The screenshot that you posted in an earlier reply (from the module Info screen) shows that the Gateway module in this car is still having problems identifying the details of the 16 module. Clearly from the SCAN information, the Gateway module is correctly talking to the remaining modules on the CAN network  - but  as I said, the missing data suggests that there might be a communication issue with the 16 module. 

At this point in the diagnostic process it's not yet possible to identify if the fault is caused by an issue with the module itself (my hunch is that this is the likely cause), or if there is a problem with the physical infrastructure for the 16 module.

Since it appears that little is known about the previous history of this "rebuild gti se US 2016" Golf - I suggest that you eyeball the 16 module and confirm the integrity of the 2 x connectors and more importantly, read the identification data on the module housing.

I checked two connector and it seems to be good, And I reconnected it, even changed another steering wheel. But I still got the same result. BTW the parking level works fine but it shows up fault code.

hmm............ I assume that the B115496 - CCS Switch Internal malfunction error is still active. This fault strongly suggests (to me at least)  that for some unknown reason, the Cruise Control signal is either not being generated by the 16 module, or the signal is not being received by the Gateway module.

Do you know if CCS was factory fitted to this car, or if it was retrofitted by the previous owner? A way of checking is to read the "PR numbers” on the vehicle data sticker, which can be found in the spare wheel well and in the service schedule - see example below:

Maybe post-up a pic of the data sticker, so we can see how this car was factory built

Also, I'm still concerned that the detailed Info. about the 16 module can't be identified by the Gateway module  - not sure why this is happening, or if the problem is related to the CC matter! Maybe post-up a backup of the 16 module with OBD11 (hopefully the missing data will be included in the Backup file?)- read HERE

hmm......... of course anything is possible - but my hunch (based solely on the data in this thread) is that the CCS problem on this car is NOT likely to be the clock-spring!

To explain why I'm skeptical about this suggestion -  maybe the best way forward is for you to understand the basics of how the multi-function buttons on the steering wheel works on a mk7 Golf (because it's very different to the arrangement on previous model Golfs).

OK -the information from the group of buttons on the left and right side of the steering wheel is read by a Multifunction module that the wiring diagram calls J453. This module is NOT shown in your SCAN report because it is a Subsystem

 The common mistake that most folk make when dealing with multifunction buttons is that they believe that the buttons are controlled by the 16 Steering module.

While it's true that the control module for the buttons is connected to the 16 Steering module - this is ONLY a routing connection for the wiring loom! Actual control for the multifunction buttons (via J453) is from the Gateway module (not the 16 Steering module).

Below is a schematic of my words above:

In my diagram above:

• J527 = 16 Steering wheel module
• J533 = 19 Gateway module
  

So, hopefully with the discussion above it is clear why the CCS error message in your SCAN is reported by the Gateway module and not from the Steering wheel module.  The line (communication path) shown in my picture above from J453 to J533 uses what's called LIN protocol - which is a single-wire communication system

In regard to your question about the cause of the fault being the "clock spring" - the reason why I suggest not is that the information in the dotted line for F350 above is the combined data for ALL the steering wheel buttons. 

If the "clock coil" was faulty in this car, I would expect that the error message from the Gateway module would relate to a failure to talk to J453 (i.e. loss of comms from ALL the steering wheel buttons). But as is evident from your SCAN, the error solely relates to the CCS button. This suggests to me that the cause of the CCS error is either in J453, or in the CCS button itself.

hmm........... my only remaining concern about this problem is that perhaps the previous owner retrofitted CCS and maybe the fitment was not properly completed - I'm guessing, of course!

My earlier request to see a copy of the vehicle data sticker was an attempt to understand whether this car had CCS as factory built, or if the previous owner installed the facility.

Since you can't provide the sticker - maybe check if the wire that enables the Engine module to recognize the status of the CCS switch-positions has been installed.

Here's a copy of the relevant part of the VW wiring diagram:

The wire in question is reference *3 above. As shown, Mk7s with CCS must have a wire (OEM color = Black/White) terminated on pin #5 of J527. This wire connects to the Engine module. 

I suggest that you eyeball the J527 connector and confirm the status of pin #5 (which is on connector A in my picture showing the location of J527 - in my previous reply)

• If the wire is present and,
  • if it's Black/White - then CCS was almost certainly factory built into this car.
    
  • if it's NOT Black/white - likely CCS was retrofitted to this car after delivery
    
• If the wire is NOT present, CCS was incorrectly retrofitted to this car - in this case, install the wire, clear errors and retry the buttons

yes indeed - the Black/white cable almost certainly means that CCS was factory fitted to this car - albeit I don't know if the switch mechanism was originally on the turn-signal stalk, or the steering wheel buttons!!

So after you changed the whole steering wheel - were there any changes to your SCAN?
