Car disengages from transmission once it has warmed up

Hi all,

I have a golf mk7 2013 jap import.

When car is up to temperature, applying the brakes the transmission disconnects from the vehicle. A tonne of faults get thrown up ranging from ACC to TPMS.

When the problem happens, the engine is still running however the vehicle will free rev (thinking its in neutral). I will turn the car off and try turning it on and thats where i see the flashing P on gearshifter. The car wont turn on and display says to select P or N, however the shifter is locked in position P but is not aware.

All problems go away when left for a few hours and can remove almost all codes. This has now happend on 3 different occasions and seems to progressively get worse. When recovering the car yesterday, i was limited to gears 1, 3 and 5.

I believe its the mechatronic unit at fault but would appreciate everyones input.

Flashing P and no communication with TCU, I know a few of these cases including mine, All of them ended up needing new mechatronics.

You should have a mechanic check it.

Thanks for your quick reply, that gives me a bit more confidence pointing towards the mech unit.

I had a mobile mechanic come out (not vw specialist) but once the car has sat a while, the transmission is fine to read and doesnt come up with any issues until the problem arises again.

Luckily i had my scan tool with me to catch it at the right time when it went again.

The weird thing is, other than no comm with TCU, you cant really diagnose it with a scan tool.

In my case I just had to trust my mechanic and replace the Mechatronics, car drives perfectly ever since.

hmm......... except that while your SCAN does show a plethora of errors on various modules - it does NOT "catch" a problem with a failed "TCU"!! 

So, using just the information in the SCAN report and with no offense intended to my fellow moderator - it would be very difficult to make a diagnostic conclusion the the cause of this problem is a faulty 02 module - IMO, of course!! 

Don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting that that it's not possible for the mechatronic unit to have failed. I'm just commenting that the odd discrepancy between your explanation of this problem and the results of your SCAN does prompt an alternative explanation

Clearly the U010100- Lost Communication with TCM  error in the Gateway module is pertinent to this problem.

The fact that there is NO error data recorded in the mechatronic fault memory in your SCAN suggests that the TCU is OK. So, given this fact and because the ONLY error message related to this problem in your SCAN is lost CAN communication with the TCU, it is reasonable to conclude that the cause could be with the CAN high/low wires, or the mating connections joining the Gateway module and the TCU. Of course I'm guessing - but it's worth considering IMO.

PS: The  U101400 - Control module incorrectly coded error in the Dashboard module almost certainly is NOT a mechatronics fault!! Plus, I've not previously seen a mk7 with a 0E Media Player module! Again, with no offense intended - both these facts suggest that coding changes have been made to this car that MIGHT BE incompatible with the OEM factory build. If so, I suspect that at least some of the other errors in this SCAN could have resulted from this cause

The dashboard error is due to the car being a jap import. The speedometer was changed to suit uk roads, probably not done properly hence the code. Media is probably a similar issue, not done by me.

The reason why no codes are shown for tcu is because it cannot scan the module, it was blacked out with the following message "control unit not responding. Check ignition and try again."

I hope the above paints a better picture, however i will look at the other items you mentioned.

I started the car yesterday and it started first time with no faults shown, other than dashboard and U112100 (brakes). Almost felt as if nothing was ever wrong with the car....
