changes to long code bytes don't stay saved..

Hi,

I've been using an OBDeleven Pro for a while to scan and diagnose faults but now I need to change Gateway coding on a newly installed module but I can't get enough information about how to do it with OBDeleven. I found some details and made a change but it won't stay saved even though it shows up in History.


I want to activate the trailer electronics module which after installation. It is wired in and correctly connected and is now detected in the list of modules but needs activating. The instructions say to go into the Gateway Module (19) and tick the checkbox (69) which is described as Trailer and that will remove the fault code in the Gateway Module that says module incorrectly coded.

I have gone into Gateway adapatations and basic setup etc and the only option is Channel 1 through Channel 4 and an option to enter a number between 1 and 254. Nothing obvious to change or adapt. and no way to find Trailer checkbox (69).

Then I looked into Long Coding and it shows 3 Bytes and each Byte has it own screen with bits on it and check boxes and a few have a description like

Volkswagen

Four Wheel Drive

or Bit1, Bit2, Bit3...

but very few labels exist on the check boxes.

I was convinced from my reading that the Trailer module is on Byte 2 (last Byte) Bit 6 and I have tried to tick that checkbox and save it - it responds with "accepted" but the Long Code value then reverts to the previous value. It makes a record in the history that the change was done but doesn't alter the byte value and the fault - incorrectly coded persists.

I might be changing the wrong Byte but I have tried bit six on Byte 0 to no avail.

The Channel numbers in the Adaption menu on the Gateway module are not explained or labeled anywhere that I can find so I have tried to set Trailer activation (69) by entering 069 and 69 as the channel number since that is the controller number in the VCDS instructions that has a checkbox that has to be ticked but OBDeleven displays the alert not valid or not available so I have started at 001 and gone forward using the arrow button but after 50 increments or so nothing meaningful shows.. as a result I haven't been able to access the Gateway adaptation. It seems that the channels do not relate to the installed modules. My attempts make long coding changes aren't valid or don't relate to other information.

This morning I went to my local mechanic who very kindly connected his VAG-COM and PC and went into Gateway coding, scrolled down to 69 (Trailer) and ticked the box and saved it. The result of the latest scan is the Gateway no long shows the the previous Trouble Code 01044 - Control Module incorrectly coded. Its gone - I now have to test the trailer function to make sure it works properly but no faults are showing.

Also, the long coding value in the Gateway was not changed as a result of the activation of 69 Trailer which is interesting and I guess it means this function isn't using long coding.

It been disappointing to have searched and read and tried hard to crack this including hours connected with the OBD searching through each OBDeleven menu and submenu to find anything that relates to the VCDS equivalent and still failed until I resorted to a workshop with a VAG-COM.

After the trailer activation I have been trying to use OBDeleven to do other adaptations associated with Trailer like deactivating Park Assist / parking sensors when the trailer is attached which is supposed to be in to the Parking Assistance module Adaptation menu to see if the parking assist is turned off when trailer is connected.. another disappointment because when I try going into long coding it displays "something went wrong" even if I try accessing via security login beforehand.

I have found just one related Byte / Bit in the 09 Central Electrics module which relates to Fog Lamp OFF when trailer attached and that looks like where I can correct the behaviour if its wrong. Will test this later.

Would like to see a forum moderator comment on my experience here. Certainly has been frustrating since I generally can work this kind of stuff out after searching around and careful experimenting.

Hi Christo, 

I had exatly the same problem - the solution was ridiculously easy. 

You just have to access the installation list (Verbauliste) by pressing the red button with a pen on it and activate the trailer control unit 69. You find it at the bottom of the control units overview page...

Works like a charm now
