While I was driving my Audi completely died. It gave me a little smoke then shut off and would not start. There was no clanking sounds or anything like that so it leads me to think it’s electrical. What can I look for in a scan to find the cause? How can I narrow it down at all? The car will turn the starter but won’t engage when I turn the key. I think it might be a safety causing that. I pulled out the ecu and all the relays seem fine under there. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I had a very similar situation on my car (but not your model), when I ran a scan I got the following errors.
P130A00 Hide cylinder P030100 Cyl.1 Misfire Detected P030300 Cyl.3 Misfire Detected P030400 Cyl.4 Misfire Detected P33B900 Cylinder 3 Combustion misfire during direct injection detected P33C200 Cylinder 4 Combustion misfire during combine operation detected P030000 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected I also had a random issue with the starter motor and got P305400 Starter does not turn – Mechanically blocked or electrical malfunction
I also had the fact the car would not start, and then it did for a minute and lots of white smoke.
Bottom line in my case it was the fuel injectors had failed and were just dumping fuel into the cylinder. Afraid i dont know how to confirm its injectors but hopefully a search on the web will tell you where to look

Thank you for the feedback. That's a good place to start since I got similar codes when it happened. They show up different now. Did you figure out the cause. Injectors directly? Or fuel management? Fuel pressure regulator or one of the sensors that could cause too much fuel? It sounds like it turns the starter so maybe my starter solenoid went out at the same time or could it be some kind of fail safe? I swapped the ecu and it made no difference so I reinstalled my original. This is mind boggling.
