Put this to the forum in case it could be of use for anyone facing challenges with resetting/adjusting in a MK5 Golf model. Pls. note I have now sold the car in question a while ago and this thread is only for information IF someone facing similar challenges and – this info could be of use(?)
Short background,
I renewed my clockspring sensor as I was unable to get rid of the yellow steering wheel symbol in my instrument/dashboard. At that time my car (a 2006 model) had about 170 000 km on the clock so it was “normal” wear as I took it.
But I did face some real challenges when trying to get things in order again. I was totally unable to clear the faults w OBDeleven as it turned out to be more areas to be addressed here. The basic setting for the steering angle G85 was never possible to achieve even if I renewed the angle sensor.
I found out that the rear wheel bearings and ABS sensor also played a vital part here so pls. check those IF you find yourself in G85 troubles. Of course this goes for the front bearing/ABS-ring and ABS sensors. I renewed both rear bearings and one ABS sensor as they were about to get bad, but this didn’t help me out. But it did though leave me with a peace of mind that at least these parts was now all ok.
Important
When I first renewed the steering ring-sensor with correct part nb it turned out to be in-correct! Or more correctly, it actually comes in 2 different types!! I enclose some pics of this – the backside on the ring-sensor actually had different sized sliced slots that optically “communicate” with the steering angle sensor. This IS VERY important to confirm if anyone needs to change the ring sensor. Fortunately the old plastic “slot ring” can be removed from the faulty ring-sensor and remounted on the new part. It is a bit fiddley but in general ok to do without obstacles.
Next – I replaced the actual steeringangle-sensor again – then it all started to work and I was allowed to reset the codes and finish the job.
As I started
Hope this info and pics can be of any help for you in the future when facing any G85 sensor hick-ups. It took me loads of time to overcome/close this “small detail”. I did search all forums for additional information and also the OBDeleven support but was out of luck. So even if I have a background as car mechanic this one was a real troublesome fault to clear.
I add some pics to (hopefully) make it a bit more understandable
Good luck
/Eric
